How To Check Your Tire Tread with a Penny
Written by Clair M.
Tire treads are like shoes for your tires. The less grip you have the easier it is for you to slip and fall with weather conditions like rain or snow. It might feel like a hassle to get up off your comfy couch, head over to your nearest Quick Lane Tire & Auto Center just to have someone check the tread on your tires.
A Penny for Your Thoughts
Well not to worry, you can check your tread right at home! Do you have a penny? That’s all you need!
Place the penny upside down on the tire (head towards the tire). If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, your tires are shallow and worn. Meaning: your tires need to be replaced. If part of Lincoln’s head is covered by the tread (more than 2/32 of an inch) your tires are still fine.
We also recommend doing this on several locations on the tire because driving habits may display inconsistent wear patterns that lead to premature wear. Remember to inspect your four primary tires and spare tires once a month.
Why Tire Tread Matters?
Safety. That’s the number one priority.
Tire needs enough tread depth to allow rain to escape through the tire’s grooves. These grooves are designed to direct water away from the tire so it can remain in contact with the road. The deeper the groove the more water can move. The shallower the groove the more dramatic effect on the vehicle’s ability to stop on wet roads meaning hydroplaning, floating on the water, and losing traction. This hinders the communication from the steering wheel or the brakes. SCARY!
